Spotlight on Architectural Excellence [2020]

Addition to the Stretto House – Adding onto an Icon

Max Levy, FAIA, known for his seamless integration of landscape and architecture, faced a unique challenge when tasked with expanding the acclaimed Stretto House, originally designed by Steven Holl in 1992. Rather than attempting to mimic Holl’s distinctive style, Levy sought to enhance the original structure by adding three bedrooms in a manner that complemented its expressive design. The resulting bedroom wing, connected to the main house by a delicate glass hallway spanning 80 feet, pays homage to the natural surroundings while maintaining its own identity. Set away from the main structure, the addition features linearly arranged rooms with glass doors that seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor living spaces.

“The light sails connect with the spirit of the house, and to me that really had more to do with nature,” Max says. “We just looked up and related to the sky.”

Levy’s thoughtful incorporation of nature is evident in the inclusion of roof monitors with diaphanous light sails, reminiscent of the original water theme, and carefully selected materials that echo the aesthetic of the original house without replication. By honoring the individuality of both architects, the Stretto House addition stands as a testament to the art of building upon a masterpiece, setting a new standard for architectural excellence.
